Colder weather is on the way but that does not mean the end of container gardening season. Dressing containers with pansies, ornamental grasses, ivy, or garden mums provides enjoyable gardening throughout the cooler months. Use seasonal flowers for an autumn-inspired container using yellow or orange mums with ivy (shown below). Plus, containers do not have to be watered as much as summer plants, which gives you more time to enjoy the Northeast Georgia fall scenery. To get your containers ready for the cooler months ahead, try our Foothills Organics™ Potting Soil by following the suggested use below:
Make sure your container has good drainage.
Fill the container about 1/3 full with Foothills Organics™ Potting Soil.
Loosen the root ball of the plant and place in the container.
Continue filling with Foothills Organics™.
Water the planting and allow it to drain.
Fall is an important time of the year to apply Foothills Organics™ Compost to your gardens. Foothills Organics™ Compost adds nutrients to the soil while increasing beneficial bio-logical activity and improving soil texture and pH. Add Foothills Organics™ Compost to your soil as you pull up your harvest in the fall and replenish the nutrients lost during the growing season. By applying Foothills Organics™ Compost in the fall, this gives the microbes all winter to absorb into your soil so you are ready to plant again in the spring!
What's growing in your garden this Fall? If you like eating a lot of lettuce, growing the salad mix varieties is a tried and true way to save money. Can you guess which lettuce has the highest per pound yield? Romaine is the highest-yielding type of leaf lettuce, and it's even healthier than kale (now that is a bonus)!
Remember to always provide your lettuce plants with good-quality soil such as amending your native soil with Foothills Organics Compost. Also our Foothills Organics Potting Soil is a perfect ready-made blend ready for your raised beds or containers.
If your business is interested in decreasing the amount of food waste you are sending to the landfill and saving money, Foothills Organics™ can provide you with resources and disposal solutions to reduce, reuse, and recycle your food waste, thereby returning our finished product to your community!
Did you know that over one fourth of all food produced for human consumption goes to waste? The annual value of this excess food is estimated at around $31 billion.1 There is great potential for restaurants, grocery stores, food processors and other businesses to utilize their food waste and save money.
Food waste is the third largest portion of the U.S. waste stream, yet at a recovery rate just under 3%, it is currently the least recovered portion.2 In 2015, the USDA cited “Food loss and waste in the United States accounts for approximately 31 percent — or 133 billion pounds — of the overall food supply available to retailers and consumers...".

Living in North Georgia is perfect...however our house is located on a cliff which means there is not but a small space for an ideal garden. So, we decided to modify our gardening spaces and come up with our own "foothills" garden areas.
We thought it would be fun to show others who are new to gardening or who have limited space, that having a huge garden is not necessary in order to produce yummy veggies and herbs!
These are some pictures of our garden that we created using trees from our backyard. The area we chose, in these photographs, is a combination of native soil and fill-dirt, but that didn't stop us! Just remember...by adding organic matter like Foothills Organics Compost™ to the native soil creates healthy, fertile soil ready for gardening!
